Details from a final year in fashion design.

Still in my pajamas.
Still trying to finish off this portfolio.
Still need to print it.
Still need to have a shower.
Still need to tidy up the house.
Need to get outta here by 3pm…
It’s 1:33pm.

Because when you have a deadline, you become a total slob like me.

If I can’t bind it today, I’m just going to sew it together. Fuck it, as if I’m going to be ready by 6pm to bind it. Presentation for range on Monday morning, need to finish it by today or Saturday. Wah. 11 Garments. Already feelin’ the pressure.

Clearly Cadillac inspired.Thierry Mugler in the 1990s.
Just found a site the other night that makes vintage car upholstery cloth, vinyl, leather and seat piping (also known as seat welt). Original, so it’s as real of the deal you can get and they send out samples for free. So I can’t wait to get it in the mail. Nothing like some good ol’ fashion snail mail heading your way. It would be great for contrasts in pants/dresses and jackets. From memory I ordered samples for leather in green and white for a 1955 Coupe De Ville. A few other fabric ones from 1955, unfortunately nothing from earlier than that were available. Also put in a request for fabric from a 1954 Packard (Formal) Patrician with deep red seat welt. Here’s a back seat picture:
How good looking is that back seat. Comfy and dangerous without seat belts.Comfy Dangerous.

Update-age

If my memory serves me right I haven’t even updated for a month.
A month.

Apologises.

I’ve finalised my 6 outfits for the year which is great, I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to meet my own deadlines but when you put your mind to it everything can just fall into place. Still not completely sure about fabrics yet, deffinately leather, shirting-weight cotton, cotton drill and perhaps some silk delustred satin is a go.
Lecturers seem keen on dashes of patent leather. I raided the footwear store room for some ideas.

Altogether:
11 Garments

3 dresses for womenswear. The rest is menswear. Didn’t predict I’d be doing far more menswear but it makes sense afterall creative menswear is what really got me into fashion later on. It seems like such an underrated area to get into, a lot people I know say it’s completely boring. It’s surprising now because people have approached me and seen my designs and they say it’s great to do menswear for that reason. I wanted it to look different to everything else out there, but not too out there that it would only be worn by an adventurous man. Looking at StyleSight and other fashion orientated sites and media seems to advertise menswear as an avant-garde male who looks like no one else. It seems narrow-minded, not the everyday kind of guy- menswear just isn’t marketed that way almost like a place and a person you can never look like. Or maybe you wouldn’t want to. I feel like it needs to be distinctive enough that it makes any guy say ‘hey that looks interesting’. I don’t know that’s just my opinion there.

Shall post the pictures of the final designs after this post…

Finalised my workspace at tafe on Friday. What a day that was. I couldn’t help myself by raiding the footwear storeroom for leather samples, found some patent and nice printed ones too. This is the overall inspiration board for all of my design stuff for the final range, good effort really.

4:27 minutes of goodness.

The current tune for writing up this design brief, thinking it all over, piecing together pictures to present in class. Uni SA stuff is going well I’ll have the toile done by Monday. It is quite cute.

Also checking out some fabric wholesalers next week. I am excited. Actually you’re probably tired of me using that word. At this point I’m not caring.

How good are Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders? Great to hear some unreleased stuff. Angsty yet pleasant.
